Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ Expert to Debate on U.S.-Chinese Relations at Ohio State

Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ political science and East Asian Studies professor Bin Yu has been invited to join a debate on “Rising China: Trade and America’s Pacific Posture," sponsored by the Alexander Hamilton Society (AHS) of The Ohio State University. The debate will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, in the Mendenhall Lab, located in building 054 at 125 S. Oval Mall on Ohio State’s campus.

The debate is against the backdrop of the ongoing and intensifying trade wars between the United States and many other countries (EU, Canada, Mexico, etc.) particularly with China.

This is the third time Yu has participated in an AHS debate at Ohio State. Yu will debate with Phil Levy, a Senior Fellow for the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. Both Yu and Levy earned their doctorates from Stanford University. In addition to his normal teaching schedule at Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ, Yu is also a Senior Fellow of the Shanghai Association of American Studies and Senior Fellow at Russian Studies Center of the East China Normal University in Shanghai. He is the author and co-author of six books and more than 150 book chapters and articles in such journals as World Politics, Strategic Review, China and Eurasia Forum Quarterly, Asia Policy, Asian Survey, International Journal of Korean Studies, Journal of Chinese Political Science, Harvard International Review, among many others.

Since 1999, Yu has also been a regular contributor to the quarterly Comparative Connections of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C., in which he has focused on Russia, China and Central Asia. He has also published numerous op-ed pieces in many leading English- and Chinese-language media outlets around the world. Yu has been a professor at Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ since 1991.

Previously an associate professor of business administration at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, Levy was a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute and taught at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. From 2003 to 2006, he served first as senior economist for trade for President George W. Bush’s Council of Economic Advisers and then as a member of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s Policy Planning Staff, covering international economic matters. Before working in government, he was a faculty member of Yale University’s Department of Economics for nine years and spent one of those as the academic director of Yale’s Center for the Study of Globalization.

Professor Peter Mansoor of Ohio State’s history department will serve as moderator for the debate. Mansoor, a military history professor, served as General David Petraeus's executive officer in Iraq and is a regular CNN military analyst. The debate is open to the public.

According to its website, the AHS is a nonpartisan, nonprofit nationwide organization with branches at various universities across the country. Its mission is to promote debate and intellectual thought on national security, economics and other pressing world issues. Ohio State’s chapter conducts small group discussions and larger speaking events featuring many distinguished speakers throughout the academic year. The chapter is one of the largest in the country.
