Learning Assistant Program

Are you an academically focused person that loves helping others learn and understand? Do you welcome the opportunity to become a better teacher, even if you aren't an Education major or minor? Do you want to get weekly mentorship by Ƶ Faculty on how to connect with students, as well as further your mastery of the subject area?

If you answered yes, then the Learning Assistant Program might be for you.

WHAT ARE LEARNING ASSISTANTS?

Learning Assistants are undergraduate students who, after completing a course, and through the guidance of weekly preparation sessions and a pedagogy course, return to the classroom and facilitate discussions among groups of students in a variety of classroom settings that encourage active engagement.

The essential components of the Learning Assistant Programs are often visually described as follows.

At Ƶ,

  1. The PEDAGOGY course will be EDUC 280 - "Learning Assistant Pedagogy" and it will taught in the Spring 2025. This course would swap with EDUC 105, and we encourage you to take it.
  2. The EXPERIENCE would currently occur in Chem 121, Data 227, and Math 201. You must have completed the course prior to returning to it. And, you'll get compensated for participating back with the class!
  3. The MENTORSHIP will occur weekly with the faculty member teaching the class. These meetings are important as you will be meaningfully engaged in planning and "activating" the classroom.
