Alan Stickney taught courses in numerical analysis, matrix algebra, linear algebra, mathematical modeling, abstract algebra, and foundations of geometry. His primary research interest is in the use of technology in the teaching of mathematics. Among his publications are computer-based instructional modules on various topics in precalculus and calculus and a number of papers on the use of graphing calculators. He was also a contributing author of the three-volume Calculus Exam File series and the Linear Algebra Exam File.

Stickney has presented professional papers on computer simulation, the mathematical preparation of incoming college students, and the use of graphing technology and computer algebra systems in the teaching of mathematics. He has taught numerous workshops on the educational uses of graphing calculators and the DERIVE computer algebra system. He has also attended workshops and short courses at various universities and professional meetings on topics such as computer graphics, computer modeling, and numerical linear algebra.

Stickney has served on several state-wide committees of the Mathematical Association of America, including a term as president of the Ohio Section of the Association. A former Chair of the Department, he earned his B.S. at Michigan State University and his M.S. and Ph.D. at the University of Michigan. He joined the Ƶ faculty in 1979.
