COMPASS: Study Skills

There are many ways to work with the information and test your knowledge in each subject area.

  • Identify the main topics and write down everything you know about each one. Once completed, compare with your notes and highlight the items that you left out to focus on more heavily;
  • Develop questions that you would ask if you were leading the class. Use this as a study guide and quiz yourself;
  • If there are items that you can easily compare, such as elements from the periodic table or influential leaders in history, create a chart to find commonalities and differences;
  • Practice explaining the concepts you've learned in class to others;
  • Redraw visuals used in the notes/books/etc.;
  • Write a summary of your notes in your own words;
  • Combining the important items from your reading notes AND from your class notes in a more comprehensive way.

What other things should you think about?

  1. Make sure the environment you study in is similar to the one you will be testing in – you perform better when you practice where you will play!
  2. If you're having trouble staying focused, try writing everything on your mind in a notebook to revisit once you're done studying.
  3. The more often you review, the more confident you will feel with the information and the easier it will be to recall your notes.
