The Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ Writing Center acknowledges the importance of being not only available but accessible to all the students it serves. While our advisors do not receive formal disability training, their continued professional development prepares them to better assist students of all abilities. In the fall of 2020, members of the Accessibility Team distributed and analyzed the results of a campus survey intended to gain feedback from students and improve practices. Guided by the survey responses and other resources, the Accessibility Team created an intentional and engaging Accessibility and Accommodation statement that affirms the Writing Center’s commitment to be accessible to all Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ students.
At the Writing Center, advisors work to help students with their writing through open and engaging conversations. The Writing Center offers flexible scheduling and in-person and online platforms for students to utilize at their convenience.
The Writing Center has taken steps to make our practices more accommodating.
- Online eTutoring sessions enable students to have a session from their living space to adapt to mental health needs.
- In-person face-to-face presents opportunities for students to work with an advisor in the Writing Center and gain instant feedback.
- In the center, students have the option of sitting with an advisor at any of the available tables or request to work in a private room with reduced distractions.
- Students may schedule repeat sessions with the same Writing Center advisor to continue work on an assignment or to build a tutoring relationship
- Students are also welcome to disclose any information they feel comfortable giving about their session preferences or learning abilities on the online session form.
- We also welcome service animals in the Writing Center space.
We define access as a means of easily and comfortably approaching all elements of the Writing Center. In terms of Writing Center practices, we aim to expand the number of students who feel comfortable and enabled to access all elements of the Writing Center, from the online calendar to finding a place to converse inside the center.
We define accommodation as finding ways to better serve students of all skill sets. With this statement, we aspire to accommodate all physical, psychiatric, learning, hearing, visual, and neurological abilities.

- We strive to continue the conversation with students about best practices through the use of an accessible feedback form located on the Writing Center’s online calendar.
- We advocate for reducing intimidation related to writing
- We aspire to improve ease of access in the physical space
- We hope this statement can foster future conversations about access and accommodation
