Individual and Team Results

Some of the results linked below may be inaccurate. In particular, the fastest time listed in 2003 might be wrong, some of the team rosters might be wrong for 2003 and 2002, only one team member is known for most teams in 2001, and the order in which the team members participated (i.e., which team member swam, which biked, and which ran) may be wrong for some teams in 2001, 2002, and 2003. Also, I think we swam only 800 yards (i.e., 16 laps) instead of 900 one year; does anybody remember what year that was? Any corrections and clarifications sent to Doug Andrews at dandrews@wittenberg.edu.

The swim-bike transition time was typically added in the swim time, and the bike-run transition time is included in the run time (I think). But that has varied from year to year as well.

May 3, 2003

Help me here, please:
for the relay teams, I have listed the three team members who originally signed up for the event. Were these the three who actually participated? And in what order did they participate -- in other words, which team member swam, which biked, and which ran? Also: Did the O'Donnell/Rote/Brown biker really finish the ride in 41:13? I suspect that should be 1:41:13, or perhaps 1:11:13. Can anyone clarify?

Also, I think this might have been the year that we swam short. In particular, I believe we swam only 800 yards (instead of 900 yards or 800 meters). And it appears that the swim-bike transition may have been lumped in with the swim time this year, too.

April 30, 2005

This year, the swim-bike transition time was added to the bike time. (The bike-run transition time was still added to the run time.) And we swam 800 meters this year (instead of the usual 900 yards).

* = stopped for train

# = took "detour" on bike course

& = Rick supplemented his event with a fourth leg -- playing guitar with WittFREE at WittFest, *immediately* after our tri, with nary a moment for showering and changing clothes.

@ = Chuck's gear set actually came apart on his bike! A couple tri participants stopped to render assistance at different times, as did a stranger on the course who fetched a screwdriver. Eventually Chuck got the bike to stay in first gear -- mostly. He had to get off every five minutes to put the chain back on, but he patiently made it back to town and finished the event.

April 29, 2006

For the first time ever, transition times were recorded this year -- for most participants, but not for everyone. So for consistent reporting purposes, the transition times are once again included for everyone in the bike segment.

April 28, 2007

The swimming lifeguards graciously agreed to serve as emergency replacements for the timekeepers we had earlier lined up who cancelled on us at the last minute, or else we would have no data at all this year. But of course the lifeguards were busy making sure we didn't drown, so some of the recorded swim times in particular might be a bit off. And I'm not sure whether all the other times are listed with the correct entries. So please do check over these times, and send me any corrections, updates, or clarifications.

* = As was the case in his only previous Witt Tri appearance in the inaugural year, Horst held off his buddy Isaac to record the fastest time. But this time he had an extra advantage: he couldn't remember the location of the turn-around on the running course and ended up turning around early, cutting off about a third of a mile. At his pace, that would have cut only about two minutes from his overall time, so he probably would've beaten Isaac anyway. But Horst vows to run the entire course next time!

& = rode one of the four bikes either owned or previously owned by Margaret Goodman.

% = Kent miscounted and ended up swimming an extra lap (2 lengths). At that pace (about 62 seconds per 50 meters), his time would have been about 16:28. Kent has swum in the Tri every year, and that would have been his personal record (except for 2003, when I suspect we mistakenly swam 800 yards instead of 900 yards or 800 meters).

@ = Ty had hurt his back a few days before the event, and hence ended up bailing on the bike after it became clear that he couldn't continue with the biking posture. But running didn't hurt as much, so he completed the running course to cross the finish line for team Dixon/Buckman.

$ = Matt reports that his bike time would have been faster if he hadn't been pulled over by a police officer. "Apparently I didn't slow down enough for his liking when I went through a stop sign!" Oops.

April 26, 2008

First of all, our thanks go out to volunteer Todd Shirley for recording times at this year's event.

I did all the splits in my head from the time sheet, so there may be several errors in what's reported below. Check whether your splits add up to your overall time, and let me know whether anything looks suspicious. For solo participants, both the swim-bike and bike-run transition times should be part of your bike time -- unless you changed to biking gear in the locker room before heading out of the pool area, in which case it would be part of your swim time. Send me any corrections, updates, or clarifications.

* = The field included six of the nine seniors from our stellar, record-setting 2007 soccer team.

& = Perhaps because of bad karma from turning around too early on the run last year, Horst missed the turn for the loop on the bike ride -- and didn't notice until he got all the way to Urbana! Even with the ample extra mileage, you might notice that he still finished the ride faster than 2/3 of the field!

% = When Rick got to State Route 55 just southwest of Urbana, he knew that he missed the turn for the bike loop as well. Knowing that he had ridden at least half the intended distance at that point, he just turned around and headed back to Witt. By my estimation, he ended up riding 22.8 miles -- 2.3 miles extra, which at his biking pace probably took him an extra 8 minutes.

@ = Yes, even the race director missed the turn onto Dallas Rd. to enter the loop at the top of the new bike ride! Fortunately, I noticed the mistake when I got to Woodburn Rd. and simply rode the loop backwards, so I didn't have to ride any extra distance.

$ = Abby was signed up for the tri, but felt too ill on the morning of the event to participate with us, so she went home for the weekend to recooperate. She was feeling better by Sunday, though, so she did her own personal version of the tri: swimming at the local YMCA, riding on her new Cannondale from her Dad's house, then running in a local park. That's the spirit!

First of all, our thanks go out to Jessica Hayden and Rachel Leeds for serving as lifeguards and recording swim splits, to Todd Shirley and Justin Houseknecht for replacing blown bike tubes for two fellow participants in the precious moments immediately before the event, to Kurt Reiber for recording bike splits and final times, and to Margaret Goodman for handling t-shirt orders and staffing the registration table.

I did all the calculations with my stat software, so there may be several errors in what's reported below.

* = Sarah and Nick each blew past the turnaround on the run, and knew they went too far when they got to U.S. 40! I'd estimate that they ran an extra 1.2 miles.

% = Laurel and Jim missed a turn near the top of the bike route, but did some good improvising and got back on course eventually, though they may have wandered all the way into Urbana in the process.

& = Nicole got WAY off the bike course somehow and earned major "bonus" miles. We're still not sure where she went or how much extra distance she covered. Despite the hour-long extra excursion, though, she still had the energy to do the run to cap off the adventure. Way to go, Nicole!

First of all, our thanks go out to Mickey Murphy, Matt Smith, and Victoria Parker for serving as lifeguards, to Christa Snyder and Adam Schueler for recording times and guarding our gear, to Keith Myers and Justin Houseknecht and Chris Raffensperger for getting the word out and securing the pool and lining up volunteers, and to Tammy Proctor for handling t-shirt orders and staffing the registration table and mopping up afterwards.

I did all the data entry myself and the calculations with my stat software, so there may be several errors in what's reported below. @ = Some folks can't get enough exercise. After our event, Marie hustled off to the Calvin's Challenge all-day bike race, and Jeff ran in the Flying Pig Marathon down in Cincinnati the next day.

* = When Keith got through swimming and jumped on the loaner road bike that a friend "fixed up" for him, he quickly noticed that the derailleur hangar was not only bent, but was thrust back between the spokes, rendering the bike totally unrideable. So he just ran home to get another bike and resumed the event. No problem.

& = Brian and Peter were this year's "volunteers" to miss the turn onto the Dallas/Woodburn loop and end up in Urbana.

% = The twins knew something was wrong on their bike leg when they hadn't seen any other bikers for quite some time. After a pleasant and fairly extensive tour of the entire southern half of Champaign county, they eventually found their way back to Springfield and campus. When they got back from the bike, they felt that four hours of fun was enough for the day, so they finished at that point and are eager to try again next year.

$ = I saw E.T. on the bike route, about 6 miles from campus, carrying his bike! I'd try to summarize his adventure in a few lines, but there's no way I'd do it justice, so here's his reply to my query about his story.

"Yes, that was me carrying my bike haha but I wish my story was as good as the one you had heard. What happened was that I woke up late, literally at 9 am exactly, so I rushed up to the HPER and on the way there noticed that my back tire was flat. I was hoping that someone there would have a pump, but I was only just able to change and jump in the pool before my heat started. I finished the swim in decent time, however I thought it was 18 laps and not 16, so I swam an extra two laps in 31:06; however I did not go and tell the guy with the clipboard until it was well past 36 minutes. I then ran and got changed and took my bike into the HPER equipment room and used the ball pump there to try and pump up my tire. I thought it was decently pumped up but almost immediately after starting the race the tire was flat again. I made it to just past where we crossed the railroad tracks until I knew I simply could not go any further on the bike. So I got off and started carrying the bike because I thought I was much closer to the actual ending than I was. When someone stopped and mentioned that I was still a solid 4-5 miles from the turn-around, I decided to turn around and head towards a road. I probably ended up carrying or dragging the bike about 1.5 - 2 miles. I got to a road, I think it was called Tremont City Road and saw a few houses not far down. So I walked to the closest one, which was interestingly enough owned by a man who works on the Grounds Crew here at Ƶ. He was great, even gave me a glass of water... I don't know if that is against the Triathalon rules haha! He lent me a phone and I called a friend who came and picked me up and drove me back to the HPER. I got there and I just kinda considered the whole idea of trying to keep my time as useless. So I asked where I was suppose to start from and just kinda took off on the run, I'd estimate that my run took... maybe 30-35 minutes but I really wasn't keeping track. I'll definitely be out again next year... hopefully with a better bike."

First of all, our thanks go out to Mickey Murphy and Victoria Parker for serving as lifeguards, to Laura Harrison, Christa Snyder, Megan Flahive, Hrund Thorgeirsdottir, Danny Nicholas, Dar Brooks Hedstrom, Patrick Braham, Bob Rafferty, Ben McCombs, Tammy Proctor, and Todd Shirley for their enormous help. Without them we would have had no time kept, no website or results posted, no possessions guarded, no route marked, no t-shirts, and we all would have gotten lost at least once out there. I am human, and prone to error, despite what my students think, so if you have any corrections please send them to me at craffensperger@@@wittenberg@.@edu.
